Although for now it seems that the WCAG 1.0 is still the standard some companies have already started incorporating into their websites some of the new and updated standards with WCAG 2.0 into their websites. This is giving them a head start on the new standards being setup.
As I was reading through a comparison chart of WCAG 1.0 and WCAG 2.0 I was actually really impressed with the way the new standards are phrased and the detail that each guideline and point has. For example with the WCAG 1.0 it mentions that you should not use flashing objects/text. But with the WCAG 2.0 it says you can use them just be sure they do not flash more than 3 times per second. There have been limitations put on the “flashing threshold”.
The more negative aspect of WCAG 2.0 is the highly increased detail and requirements from the previous WCAG 1.0 guidelines. Several of these guidelines went from one minor point to adding several points and requirements. It will make meeting the WCAG 2.0 standard a bit more difficult. There are a lot more guidelines to follow and more time and effort will be needed to ensure 100% user accessibility. But the over all effect in creating more usable and navigation friendly websites will be worth the extra effort. For a comparison chart of the new standards please visit this link.
